Do This Before You Regret It

Dave Delaney

LinkedIn hackedIf you missed the news, LinkedIn was hacked earlier this week. ArsTechnica reported that approximately 8 million passwords were leaked online. Go change your password now. Jesse Stay is a very smart person who I respect. He wrote yesterday on his blog:

I keep hearing over and over again to "change your password." That's smart. I changed mine this morning. Something that people aren't saying though is that your other social networking accounts could be at risk as well thanks to LinkedIn's poor security policies.

Read his full blog post for the additional problems he is alluding to.

Do This Before You Regret It

I am not suggesting that LinkedIn is going away, far from it. I am certain they will recover and improve their security from this incident. However, this serves as important reminder to back up your contacts.

One of the best things about LinkedIn is that they allow you to export your contacts. You should be doing this monthly. Add it to your calendar now, so you don't forget.

  • Login to LinkedIn (using your new password!) and choose Contacts.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page on the right side. You will see an option to Export Contacts.
  • It's dead simple to download your LinkedIn contacts in the format that you prefer. Choose Microsoft Outlook CSV, Outlook Express CSV,  Yahoo! Mail CSV, Mac OSX Address Book VCF, or vCard VCF.

Whenever it is possible, back it up and thank yourself later.
