Do you use business cards? Read this.

I just found this photo of me delivering a Networking For Nice People workshop from back in 2014. Time flies!

When connecting with new people at networking events, conferences, tradeshows, summits, and meetups, bring your business cards, but don't try to give one to everyone in the room. In fact, don't try to give them to anyone (unless they ask for one).

As you meet people whom you feel you can provide value to (not everyone), ask them for their business card. After you meet the person, jot a reminder on the card so you remember to follow up and what value to offer (not sell) them.

  • Introduce them to a connection who they will benefit from knowing.

  • Send them an article about a topic you were talking about.

  • Schedule a phone call or coffee meeting to get to them better.

Ok, boomerโ€ฆ

If they don't carry business cards, you can connect with them using the LinkedIn app (watch the video for details), but please take this important step...

โญ Use the Notes app (iOS) or Google Keep app (Android). Enter the person's name and add your reminder there instead. Do not skip this step, or you will forget to follow up and be left with a bunch of unknown LinkedIn connections.

When I deliver networking seminars, I go much deeper into how to see an increased return on your conference-going investment in my Nice Method Professional Networking workshop.
